Lopes has worked on many of the major active and extinct earthly volcanoes around the world ranging from Vesuvius to Mt. Pelee to Kilauea and Mauna Loa. Using the Near-Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (NIMS on the Galileo spacecraft), Lopes discovered 71 previously unknown, active volcanoes on Jupiter’s moon Io.
