There’s plenty of public beach on Dauphin Island, which means you’ll need to bring your sunscreen and umbrellas. The island itself is 14 miles long and very, very narrow, so you can explore the whole of it. Take in the seaside oasis, and expect plenty of sunshine on these stretches of serene sand.

On the west end of the island you’ll find our beautiful beaches of sugar white sand, public golf and parks with ancient oaks.

Swimming & Water Safety Generally, the ocean around Dauphin Island is quite safe: the waters are calm and the beach tapers off slowly, so swimming in the shallows is a great activity for the kids. The sand is clean and powdery, and the water warm and calm.

It is a sprawling expanse of soft, white sand, that finally gives way to the leaden waters of the Gulf, after a bit of a walk along a boardwalk, wending between the dunes. We visited the West End Public Beach Memorial Day weekend and loved our visit.

Parking is first come first serve, guest may reenter on the same day if they present their ticket however the Dauphin Island Park & Beach Board cannot guarantee a parking space upon return.

Is there a traffic light on Dauphin Island?

Nowadays, Dauphin Island thrives upon it’s emphasis on low-key, family oriented vacations. Forget road congestion, water parks and outlet malls, the island doesn’t even have need for a traffic light. Instead, envision bike paths, walking trails, miles of white sandy beaches and simplicity center.
