But all are welcome for this very informal and friendly gathering. Price is right, too. It's free. and on the third Wednesday, they vote and award the traveling trophy, which gets passed from person to person each month before being retired for the season.   There are bar shows and there are shows that raise the bar – and this one raises the bar. Brock Butler, the former frontman of the late, great Perpetual Groove, jams into our intimate bar space for an … (click for more information) intimate solo show that showcases his “fleet fingers and arsenal of trippy electronic effects,” as Savannah Connect puts it. The man behind one of the South’s most enduring and popular jam bands, Butler was behind PGroove’s indefinite hiatus so that he could take some time off from 10 years on the road. That’s a zillion rock-years, and now Butler’s striking out on his own, dazzling fans with the nimble energy that, again as Savannah Connect says, “kept the groove in the proverbial pocket” of the Athens-based jam-juggernaut. This bar-raising bar show’s presented by a huge fan, Vince Dunne, so come out and support a fan who’s supporting great music from a great talent whose return to The Handlebar helps heat up our summer.

  Susan B. Anthony, the tireless “General” who fought through the better part of the 19th century for American women’s right to vote, comes to life through the magic of Chautauqua, the Greenville edition … (click for more information) of the national cultural and educational program that was founded in 1874 in New York. That was two years after Susan B. Anthony, the leading proponent of women’s suffrage, was arrested, tried and convicted for “Voting While Female.” It wasn’t until 14 years after her death that her 72-year struggle paid off, and American women won the right to vote. Now, Marjorie Goldman (from New York) portrays the woman who gave 75 to 100 speeches a year for more than 50 years and will answer your questions as part of the Chautauqua Festival FREE “American Legends” program June 14 through 23.

  'Grass 'n' roll joins up funk/jazz/Afro-Latin in a co-bill that brings the heat
  
  Say what you will about the much-overplayed Mumford & Sons, but how cool is it for a band like that to drop into an Atlanta bar, catch the hometown Seven Handle Circus ripping some newgrass and invite … (click for more information) them to open one of their shows? A “brilliant little string band,” says Atlanta’s Backstagebeat of the Athens, Ga., sextet that twists bluegrass into rock, country and even a little rap – an “Atlanta ‘must-do.’” 7HC rocked Albino Skunk Festival, converting fans who jumped to their feet. Kicking off the nuclear-powered show is Lingo, the Athens, Ga., that soars with ripping guitar riffs, and jazz and funk wrapped in African and Latin grooves. Their hooky rock thumps with an Umphrey’s McGee-meets-Soulive vibe. “You can tell Lingo has something new to say,” says Jambase of the band that has shared stages with Jimmy Herring and Dirty Dozen Brass Band, among others.   Trapt isn’t “Reborn,” though you might think so, considering the title of their latest album, which flew to No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart. That’s huge for the band that formed in the … (click for more information) late ‘90s, but no surprise; Trapt charted No. 1 on Billboard’s Heatseekers with their 2003 eponymous debut. Multi-platinum and gold-selling, Top 10-charting, hard-rockin’ Trapt must be doing something right, they’ve got more than 380,000 "Likes" on Facebook – and they’re returning to The Handlebar, where they sold out their first (and only) show here with an opening band called Halestorm. Speaking of openers, Candlelight RED joins the bill, and, like Halestorm, they’re poised to go huge. Already, the Pennsylvania quartet has shared stages with KISS (yes, KISS), Staind, Stone Sour, Clutch, Lacuna Coil and more. This won’t be the last you see of these guys – but make sure it’s the first time, at least. With summer “Reborn,” here’s one monster way to kick off the heat.

  The Iguanas have been busy -- hanging with Jimmy Buffett, working on yet another album. Their most recent, Sin to Sin, got such acclaim that one big-time critic proclaimed that one tune “outdoes anything … (click for more information) Los Lobos did in their out-there period.” (Never mind that the Iguanas have spent two decades out-there.) In any case, just like a Buffett concert, the Iguanas bring a lot to the party. Their jambalaya of shake-your-money-maker ticker-kickers ranges from succulent West Coast R&B to hard-boppin’ conga-powered jazz to garage-Latino to crunchy, edgy rockers to funky soul. In their new album, Sin to Sin, the Iguanas’ first studio release since post-Katrina “If You Should Ever Fall On Hard Times” in 2008, the veteran road warriors make you wanna sin more.   Alt-country faves unleash bands in raucous all-American co-bill
  
  Scott Miller and Mic Harrison are “Americana” rock ‘n’ roll workhorses because they’re real, not simply because “alt-country” happens to be the Nashville/T. Bone Burnett/No Depression scene -- from Gram … (click for more information) Parsons through Son Volt. Scott grew up on a Virginia farm, and Mic plays Tennessee rock – and for awhile, the pair played as the V-Roys. Now Scott’s bringing his band, The Commonwealth, and Mic is bringing his outfit, The High Score. Country Standard Time magazine can’t say enough about these two Southern-dirt troubadours, calling both good Southern boys who hew close to their roots. “Miller’s always made an indelible impression,” CST says, likening him to early Dylan and Steve Forbert, but with a defiant swagger. Mic, meantime, has gotten edgier than his V-Roys and Superdrag days with a “raucous, robust” feel. Together, the two have released nine albums and unleashed great concert experiences. With their widely acclaimed debut CD, Passing Through The Zer0s, on Detroit’s indie Goomba label, Temple of Thieves have found the passion it takes to hit stardom. Flo Mournier, legendary drummer of Cryptopsy, and Chief Spires, bassist for death-metal icons Nile, joined with guitarist John Ehlers and Atlanta-based vocalist Michael Rock (who’d performed with a Tool tribute band) to look beyond the hardest metal and into the broad possibilities of contemporary rock.   Crossover Christian rockers make Handlebar debut on eve of new album
  
  Six million albums – five Gold, two Platinum and one Multi-platinum – along with three Grammy Awards and eight Grammy nominations, three GMA Dove Awards, and 17 No. 1 radio hits, numerous film credits … (click for more information) and thousands of sold-out shows to millions of fans … that’s Jars of Clay. Since their breakout hit, “Flood,” in 1995 (produced by prog icon Adrian Belew), Jars of Clay helped set the stage for breakthroughs from other Christian bands, such as dc Talk and Sixpence None the Richer. Since forming in another Greenville (Illinois) in 1990, the band has evolved through at least five albums with a jangle-pop sound reminiscent of Toad the Wet Sprocket and even REM. While a decidedly Christian band, JoC has had major crossover hits, opening for Sting, Matchbox 20 and Duncan Sheik and skipping through multiple genres, such as reggae, pop, alternative, rock and techno. The irrepressibly … (click for more information) irreverent Chapman is a Spartanburg society girl-turned groundbreaking Music City rocker-turned hit songwriter and author. Among the icons who’ve recorded her songs: Jimmy Buffett, Conway Twitty, John Hiatt, Joe Cocker and Emmylou Harris. Cooper’s a South Carolina-bred preacher's kid who moved to Nashville, toured with Todd Snider and John Prine and has written songs that have drawn praise from Kris Kristofferson, Tom T. Hall and more. Author of the seminal Hub City Press book, “Hub City Music Makers,” Cooper is a brilliant writer who soulfully complements Brace, who fled Washington, D.C., for Nashville.   The Connells formed a decade before The Handlebar first opened in 1994, went on to become a staple of the college-rock scene and the Carolinas’ party-heavy pop-rock circuit, which carried them well into … (click for more information) the ‘90s. For most of that decade, the Raleigh, NC, jangle-pop band hovered in Billboard charts, with hits like “Stone Cold Yesterday,” “Slackjawed” and “'74-'75,” songs that evoked R.E.M.-esque melodic power pop. Since their last album, the self-released “Old-School Dropout,” the Connells seemed to have … vanished. But, no. The boys still play here and there – now here, after nearly 20 years of having quite making it to the HB. They’ve played stadiums with Def Leppard; they’ve played Late Night with Conan O’Brien; they’ve released albums that have won new fans and kept old ones. And they put on a rollicking good show. Yesterday and Today. We’re looking forward to hosting ‘em here in the Upstate.

  The last time Junior Brown schooled the Upstate in country-shred was in 2006, about two years after his last studio album. See, the fire-flingin’ fretboarder’s not known for his studio work, but for his … (click for more information) electrifying live shows, whose centerpiece includes Junior’s trademark “guit-steel,” the hybrid guitar and steel guitar that breathes, well, fire. His old-country baritone delights in off-kilter tunes like “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead,” “Highway Patrol” and “Venom Wearing Denim” that explode with blistering licks that make you wonder what Big Red (his original guit-steel) ever did to HIM. Accompanied by (usually) a drummer on a single snare and cymbal, along with an acoustic rhythm-guitar player, Junior always delivers – and at one of his shows here he even delivered the legendary Buddy Miles, drummer for Jimi Hendrix. Speaking of Hendrix, Arkansas Times said: “Man, if you don't know the name Junior Brown by now, lemme just run this by you: The Jimi Hendrix of Country. Yes.”
